ALSA Malaysia Special Newsletter: Eyes on Myanmar

On the morning of 1 February 2021, democratically elected members of Myanmar’s rulling party, the National League for Democracy, were deposed by the Tatmadaw Myanmar’s military through a coup d’etat to declare the results of the November 2020 general election invalid. The military seized full control over the country’s government and declared a state of emergency which will remain for one year. President Win Myint and State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi were detained, along with ministers, their deputies and members of parliament.
