ALSA Malaysia Special Newsletter: Eyes on Myanmar

On the morning of 1 February 2021, democratically elected members of Myanmar’s rulling party, the National League for Democracy, were deposed by the Tatmadaw Myanmar’s military through a coup d’etat to declare the results of the November 2020 general election invalid. The military seized full control over the country’s government and declared a state of emergency which will remain for one year. President Win Myint and State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi were detained, along with ministers, their deputies and members of parliament. Massive protests have been taking place over the country since 1 February 2021, aiming to cripple the workings of military government. Read the full newsletter below.
